Type Locality and Naming

The type section is at Village Tangtou southwest of Tangshan, Nanjing. The Tangtou Fm is derived from the Tangtou Bed proposed by Mu Enzhi et al. in 1955. The Tangtou Fm is derived from the Tangtou Bed proposed by Mu Enzhi et al. in 1955. The Tangtou Bed had previously been referred to the yellowish green shale intercalated with nodular limestone in the upper part of the Tangtou Limestone. In 1962, Zhang Wentang renamed it the Tangtou Fm.

Synonym: (汤头组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is dominated by shale and marl. In the type area, the Tangtou Fm is 20 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is conformably underlain by the limestone of the Tangshan Fm

Upper contact

Regional extent

The Tangtou Fm, with a persistent lithology, is 10-20 m thick, and is seen on Langya Hill in Chuxian (25.9 m thick), Sinianpan in Hexian (4.3 m thick), Dongguanshan in Lujiang (10.8 m thick), Susong (8 m thick) and Guichi-Pengze (20-30 m thick) in Lujiang, Liudu in Shitai (2.7-7 m thick), Tangshan in Nanjing, Anhui (10.8 m thick) and Kunshan. At Liudu in Shitai and Kunshan, the Tangtou Fm is composed of nodular argillaceous limestone, and shows a lithology similar to that of the Linxiang Fm.
